Assignment Description
Students will participate in a full-class Socratic Seminar centered on Pericles and his leadership of Athens. Using their Pericles Reading Guide as an evidence notebook, students will discuss whether Pericles was ultimately good or harmful for Athens, why he was so effective at persuading citizens, and how Athenians might have balanced his strengths with the dangers of his power. The seminar will focus on close use of the text, respectful dialogue, and critical thinking as students consider themes of democracy, persuasion, war, and responsibility. Students will be assessed on preparation, use of evidence, participation, listening, and depth of reasoning through a seminar rubric.
