Byzantine Icon In-Class Presentations

Overview:

Today marks the conclusion of our Byzantine icon study for Grades 4–5. Over the past two weeks, students have been working at home to carefully observe, sketch, and color their own replications of the 6th-century icon The Virgin and Child with Saints and Angels, preserved at Saint Catherine’s Monastery on Mount Sinai.

Having completed their work independently, students will now bring their finished icon replications to class and present them. This presentation is an important part of the rhetoric stage of their learning — taking what they observed and practiced, and putting it into their own words for others.

Students will:

• Present their completed icon replication to the class.
• Share what they noticed about the original artwork (details, colors, symbolism).
• Explain how they approached their replication at home - from sketching to final coloring.
• Practice oral narration and public speaking, connecting their artwork to the history we’ve studied.

**Parent Invitation: Parents are always welcome to join us on presentation days to observe and encourage their students' final works as well as their growth in oratory skills. Our 4-5th Grade art period is from 1:45-2:15pm, Thursday 9/25.
