Assignment Description

In-Class Plan:

This week we will expand on the color wheel by learning the four qualities of color (hue, saturation, value, and temperature) and exploring common color harmonies (monochromatic, complementary, split complementary, triadic, analogous, tetradic).

We will discuss how these harmonies create balance, contrast, and mood in art.

Students will then begin planning for the upcoming 3-Line Composition project inspired by Etel Adnan by sketching six variations of simple line compositions and experimenting with different color harmonies for each.

ASSIGNMENT (Inspired by Etel Adnan):

  1. Create 6 different landscape sketches (draw a grid in your sketchbook: 6 boxes)
  2. Each sketch must include exactly 3 lines. No more, no less. Examples: a horizon line, a circle (sun/moon), and a wavy line (mountains or coastline), etc
  3. Color each composition in with a chosen color harmony. (Remember what we went over in class- Monochromatic, Complementary, Split-Complementary, Analogous & Triadic)
  4. Label each sketch with the color harmony that you chose.
  5. Select your top sketch for the final project (painting on a full sized sheet next week).

*See the attached .pdf to review the slides from today's class.

*Note: If you did not finish your color wheel last week, you will have time next week to finish along with your unit project.
