Assignment Description
In this lesson, students explored how Greece’s victory in the Persian Wars shaped the rise of the Classical Period. We discussed how defeating a powerful empire gave the Greeks confidence in freedom, debate, and human reason and how this new mindset encouraged people to ask big questions about truth, justice, nature, and what it means to live well.
Students examined key Classical thinkers and writers including early philosophers, historians, doctors, and playwrights and learned how they moved Greek society away from myth and toward reasoned inquiry. Through narration and a mini Socratic seminar, students connected ancient Greek ideas to modern life, considering how these thinkers still influence science, medicine, politics, and culture today.
We ended by setting up the next lesson and looking ahead to how Greek success and freedom also created rivalry and tension which laid the groundwork for conflict between Athens and Sparta and the coming Peloponnesian War.
