Assignment Description

Today in Ancient History, students explored the Persian Wars and the dramatic clash between Greece and the Persian Empire. We began by learning how Persia tried to conquer Greece without fighting by demanding “earth and water,” meaning total surrender. While many Greek city-states complied, Athens and Sparta refused in different ways, setting in motion a chain of events that led to three famous battles: Marathon, Thermopylae, and Salamis.

Students studied each battle, looking at the leaders involved, the strategies used, and why each one mattered for the outcome of the war. They compared the strengths and weaknesses of the Persians and the Greeks, including Persia’s massive army and wealth and Greece’s skilled leaders, clever use of geography, and strong navy.

To finish the lesson, students participated in a Socratic Seminar where they debated the question: Which battle was the most important and why? They used evidence from the text, maps, and class discussion to support their arguments. The big idea we focused on was that while Persia had more power and resources, Greece often won through strategy, leadership, and unity, showing that smart leadership can overcome raw power.
