Assignment Description
In today’s lesson, students read the confrontation between Oedipus and the blind prophet Tiresias in Oedipus Rex. They explored how Sophocles uses blindness and sight as symbols of knowledge and ignorance. Students learned the meaning of hamartia (a tragic error in judgment) and discussed how Oedipus’s confidence begins to turn into blindness when he refuses to believe Tiresias. We examined Aristotle’s description of a tragic hero and how Oedipus fits that model. Students ended with a short journal reflection on the question: “When does confidence become blindness?"
