•Read LoH pages 130-131 on Tocqueville's perceptions of American society.
•Read LoH page 138 (beginning with "Perhaps the most popular of all these causes...") through the end of page 141.
•These sections are important to read together because they first show Tocqueville's impressed yet wary reaction to the potentials of American political culture. They secondly show how the society of America developed in some positive, some negative, and some ambivalent ways.
•We will discuss these sections in class on Wednesday, Nov 19.
