Assignment Description
•Opening thought: Should a leader who rises "from the people" to lead "for the people" begin leading on his own terms for the good "of the people"?
•How did Jackson's inauguration foreshadow his presidency?
•Can a nation be truly balanced if its focus on improvement is focused solely on either education OR determination/effort? Or is it a balance of either? How might the balance be achieved?
•What are the implications of Jackson's legislative legacy becoming rooted in rejection rather than affirmation?
•How does each of these vetoes speak to his strategy and vision for America:
(Use the URL link to the senate archives to go through each of Jackson's 12 vetoes.)
•If Jackson believed in limited federal power, why was he willing to exert (and arguably expand) the use of the executive branch in order to protect the populace?
•Might Jackson's policy of staff rotation speak more to distrust than attempts to establish trust? Are both of these aims achievable?
•Why might Jackson have been so willing to reject the rights of Native Americans as people and their ancestral claims? Did his involvement in the War of 1812 and conquering of the Florida territory impact his view of the tribes? (In both of these campaigns, various tribes aided the British and Spanish).
