Assignment Description

PACKET DUE: 11/5 IN CLASS

This week marks the conclusion of our Line, Shape & Composition Unit.

To complete and demonstrate your understanding, you will finish the Alexander Mosaic packet.

Instructions:

  1. Preview the artwork: Write your first impression and any immediate thoughts or questions.
  2. Watch the SmartHistory video linked below
  3. Read the background information in the packet carefully.
  4. Complete all observation sections (Technique, Design, Light, Space, Color, Symbolism). Answer in complete sentences unless the question gives you choices to check.
  5. Interpretation section: Write thoughtful answers about meaning, story, and symbolism.
  6. Composition sketch: Use simple shapes only to show how the painting is arranged. This is not about artistic skill—it’s about noticing general composition.
  7. Key Facts for Memorization: Fill in the blanks carefully (title, artist, year, medium, etc.). These will be important to remember.
  8. Review your packet before turning it in to make sure each section is complete.

Submit the finished packet on 11/5 (next Wednesday) in class.

Happy Observing!

Unit Worksheet Rubric (All Units, Middle School Art)

Each unit worksheet will be graded on a 4-point scale

The focus is on completion, effort, and reflection. This rubric applies to every worksheet throughout the year.

  • 4 points (Excellent Work): The worksheet is fully complete. All sections are thoughtfully answered, the sketch or visual portion is included, and strong effort is shown.
  • 3 points (Good Work): The worksheet is mostly complete. One or two areas may be missing or rushed, but overall good effort is shown.
  • 2 points (Partial Work): Several sections are incomplete or lack detail. Some effort is shown, but more thoroughness is needed.
  • 1 point (Minimal Work): The worksheet is turned in but is very incomplete or rushed, with little effort shown.
  • 0 points (No Work): The worksheet was not turned in.

A Note For Parents: This rubric emphasizes participation and engagement, not perfection. It helps your student practice observation, reflection, and creativity while holding them accountable for completing the work.

A Note For Students: Effort matters! Do your best to complete every section thoughtfully, even if you’re unsure of the “right” answer. Write down your ideas, make your sketch, and turn it in on time — that’s how you earn full credit.
