Assignment Description

•Watch the 2-minute YouTube video explaining what the English Bill of Rights is.
-In response to the video: What "rights" can you think of that the United States Constitution or our own Bill of Rights guarantees? Next you will discover if that "right" began with the much earlier "English Bill of Rights" in 1689.
•Read the following selections from the uploaded/provided document containing the English Bill of Rights:
-"Parliament's Victory" & "Key Gurantees" (pg 1)
-Declarations 1-13 (bottom of pg 2 and top of pg 3).
•Discuss:
-What kinds of things were the English people asking the king not to do anymore in the Bill of Rights, and what did they want him to promise to protect instead?
-Why do you think the English believed it was necessary to write these rights down instead of just trusting the king to do what was fair?
-How might the ideas in the English Bill of Rights have shaped the way American colonists later thought about their own rights and government?
•Optional Activity: Write one short modern “liberty statement” in your own words (ex: “No one should make laws without the people’s vote”).
