Assignment Description
•Read LoH pgs. 28 (Beginning of chapter 4) through the top of page 30 (to "It would not be long").
•Because the development of English politics was so integral to the formation of political standards in the colonies, we need to have a good historical grasp on the big events. We also need to see how events and progress in the colonies were mirroring the same in England itself.
•Watch the YouTube video about the historical development of Parliament.
•Be able to narrate the key events in England that helped to shape the development of colonial charter governments:
-Magna Carta, Development of Parliament, Petition of Right, English Civil War, Commonwealth, Restoration of Monarchy, Glorious Revolution, Bill of Rights.
•Think about and discuss these questions:
-How did each of these events in England build upon and strengthen one another, even if they failed or turned into conflict?
-Why did the English colonists pay attention to what was happening in England (kings, parliaments, legal charters) rather than just focusing on their own local affairs?
-How did England’s political struggles actually help—not hurt—the colonies?
-How were the colonies like “little Englands”? In what ways were they different? What patterns would you identify—what is repeating, and what is new or unique to the colonies? (Perhaps make a comparison chart)
