Assignment Description
In this lesson, students trace Achilles’ journey “from rage to rest” as The Iliad draws to a close. By reading and discussing Book 24, they witness Achilles’ transformation from a warrior driven by pride and vengeance to a man capable of compassion and mercy. When he meets Priam, the father of his slain enemy, Achilles finally sees the shared humanity behind the war. Through reflection and creative expression, students consider what kind of strength Achilles shows at the end—physical or moral—and explore how Homer suggests that true greatness lies not in victory, but in empathy and understanding.
