Assignment Description

Assignment Description:

Today in art, students continued our study of line, shape, and composition through the work of John James Audubon, the naturalist and painter known for his detailed studies of birds in their natural environments.

Students listened to a guided narrative imagining themselves as young naturalists exploring the forest, quietly observing creation just as Audubon did. When they “discovered” their bird — either a Wood Duck, Puffin, Great Horned Owl, or Roseate Spoonbill — they practiced close observation before beginning their drawing.

Each student used careful lines and shapes to capture the bird’s form, then applied thoughtful color and composition to complete the artwork.

Focus:

  • Observing like Audubon
  • Applying line, shape, and composition
  • Practicing patience and attention to detail
  • Representing God’s creation through art
