Assignment Description
•Read LoH from middle of page 122 through end of 124.
•Discuss:
-What was the "Missouri Compromise," and what two main decisions did it make about slavery and new states entering the Union?
-Why did the balance between free and slave states matter so much to leaders in Congress, and how did the Missouri Compromise attempt to preserve that balance?
-If you were a member of Congress in 1820, how would you persuade others that the Missouri Compromise was either vital for preserving the Union or dangerous for the nation’s future?
-What did (retied President) Jefferson mean by saying "We have the wolf by the ear, and we can neither hold him, nor safely let him go"?
•Watch the 2-minute video on steamboats (URL attached)
•Activity: Attached are three uploads, each of which are schematics for the Cotton Gin, Steamboat Engines, and the Automated Flour Mill. Draw your own schematic/diagram of an invention that you feel could have revolutionized production, transportation, or another area of the economy. This should be labeled with at least five steps/pieces necessary to its operation. Be ready to share and explain (in 1-2 minutes) on Monday October 27th.
