Assignment Description

•Read: Section on Lewis & Clark expedition (LoH pgs 111-112)

•Narrate the purpose of the expedition, the names/ranks of the primary explorers, and the Native American guide.

•Read primary source: Merriweather Lewis' journal entry (May 14,1805) (URL provided)

•Discuss: What dangers did the men face on this day, and how did they respond to them? What do you think their reactions show about the challenges of the expedition? Why do you think Lewis and his men were both fascinated and fearful of the grizzly bear? How might this experience have changed their view of the land and animals they were exploring? What caused the near-disaster with the perogue (boat)? How did the men manage to save it, and what might have happened if they hadn’t? What does this event tell you about teamwork and leadership on the journey?

•Mapping: Use the uploaded map to draw the national boundaries of the U.S. at the time of the expedition. Outline the Louisiana purchase and trace the expedition lines, using various colors and create a color-coded key similar to the uploaded map. Be sure to appropriately label them according to the map.
