Faith & Philosophy

My husband grew up in a pastor’s home and experienced a pivotal moment of faith in high school, which deepened as he attended Pepperdine, a Christian liberal arts university. I, on the other hand, came to faith later, having grown up in a non-Christian home. The Lord led me to Pepperdine as well, where, through a personal rock-bottom experience and honest questioning, I found Jesus. Our faith deepened significantly during our time at Pepperdine, thanks to mentors and a vibrant spiritual community. We got married right out of college and we committed to being active in a local church, serving, mentoring, and staying connected to a church body. Over the last 12 years, wherever we've lived, that’s been a priority. Now, as parents, we are passionate about discipling our kids and helping them use their gifts for the Kingdom. Together, our faith journey has shaped how we live and guide our family, grounded in grace and truth.

We have been homeschooling for the past two school years and love how much we get to be with our kids and influence and shape them for the gospel. This past fall I felt a nudge from the spirit to look for community for both myself and the kids. We fasted and prayed the month of January and during that month I met a friend whose family is a part of Saints. I went to the Vision night and loved hearing about the classical model of education, the community that is being built at Saints, and the people that I met that night. It felt such peace and confirmation from the Lord that we should apply and see what doors He'll open for us.

We read scripture everyday as a family, and have one verse we try to memorize together each week. With our older two kids we do devotions with them where they are learning to read scripture, make observations, apply it to their lives, and then we pray together. We are always talking throughout our days about the words we use being encouraging and uplifting, and when we make mistakes we practice repentance and asking each other for forgiveness. Our family attends COTC and we are a part of a community group that truly does life together. We serve as a family in the 2s class at church, and we also stepped into foster care this past year and open our home to kids/sibling sets. We believe not only teaching our kids spiritual disciplines like prayer and scripture reading, but also living out our faith by serving others and being generous with what we have.

I am excited to see our children thrive in the classical model by integrating faith into the other academic subjects, and to see them grow deeper in their understanding not only of what they believe, but why. We want our children to become critical thinkers, and to grow in their ability to see and acknowledge truth and beauty. We've long been drawn to the classical model of education and we are excited to see our kids flourish here, and make deep friendships with likeminded peers.

Christian classical education looks to form the whole child—mind, heart, and soul—by grounding learning in truth, goodness, and beauty. Academically, it follows the classical model of the trivium, recognizing the natural stages of a child’s development: building a foundation of knowledge, learning to think logically, and finally growing in the ability to express ideas with wisdom and eloquence. Spiritually, Christian classical education views all truth as God’s truth and teaches every subject this way. Rather than treating faith as a separate class, it integrates Scripture and a Christian worldview into history, literature, science, and the arts. I love that students are taught to love what is good, to seek what is true, and to cultivate virtue alongside academic excellence. I am drawn to this model because it's not just about creating successful students, but faithful, thoughtful people who can reason well, communicate clearly, and serve God and their neighbors with humility and joy.

Our heart for our children is to grow up to be emotionally healthy adults who love Jesus and love others. We want to look back on their childhood, grateful that we invested time and energy into creating memories and loving our kids well in the little moments -- free of devices and distraction. We want our family to have strong roots, a sense of belonging, an outward community focus, and using our God-given gifts for the kingdom.

Students (4)

Eleanor Grace Chapman 5th Grade 6th

Current School
Homeschool using Sonlight Curriculum and they attend Behold Community Schoolhouse on Fridays for enrichment.

As my kids get older we are looking for a classical education and a vibrant community.

Eleanor has always been a shining light. She is vibrant and outgoing, and a friend to everyone. She has classic "first born" energy, extremely helpful and justice oriented. She wants to grow up to be a writer, and she is an avid reader (will start and finish books in the same day!). She is a night owl (because she likes to read), she loves gymnastics and art. Her dream is to live on land and have horses one day. She's the absolute best big sister I could have dreamed of.

She loves ELA and art. She is very self motivated and starts her work each day without me prompting. She loves school and is very excited to join the Saints community.

She handles discipline well. Sometimes she shuts down if she's embarrassed or sad, but eventually we can get her to open up and have a conversation.

Jude Michael Chapman 3rd Grade 4th

Current School
Homeschool using Sonlight Curriculum and they attend Behold Community Schoolhouse on Fridays for enrichment.

As my kids get older we are looking for a classical education and a vibrant community.

Jude is funny, sensitive, outgoing, and playful. He does ninjastics through Let it Shine and is weirdly strong for his size/age. He's starting to compete in an invite only program through LIS. He loves playing football or basketball in the neighborhood with friends. He's also very engineer minded. He's been doing Mark Rober Crunch Lab boxes for three years now each month. If we have something we need to put together, we usually ask him to do it. He loves to be outside, loves fishing and camping, and generally a happy kid.

He has grown leaps and bounds this past year. He's gone from struggling with reading to reading chapter books and comprehending well on his own. He's a natural at math, and says that his favorite subject is science and history. He is a diligent student that sometimes gets distracted and needs redirection.

We are working with him on taking ownership when he gets something wrong. He tends to blame others and get frustrated when he is disciplined (at home, I don't see this pattern with others). He has a tender heart and is great at coming around and apologizing and making things right.

None.

Selah Jane Chapman 1st Grade 2nd

Current School
Homeschool using Sonlight Curriculum and they attend Behold Community Schoolhouse on Fridays for enrichment.

As my kids get older we are looking for a classical education and a vibrant community.

Selah is one of my favorite people in this world. She's got a great sense of humor, she loves others deeply, is very empathetic, and a great helper. She loves art and music, and has got a great memory when it comes to lyrics. She loves to dance, play in the neighborhood with friends.

We sent Selah to school newly 5 years old and have sense realized that she needed an extra year of growing and maturing. With homeschooling we've been able to go at her own pace and watch her blossom. She's grown so much in reading and math this past year, and we currently have a writing tutor who works with her twice a week to improve her grammar/writing. Being younger, she needs a little more one on one direction with her studies, and help with instructions and new concepts. She is very motivated and generally likes school.

Inside the home Selah can be strong willed and push back on discipline. We really have to stick with her and talk through things, or sometimes give her a second to regulate before coming back to the conversation. Outside of home, we get great reports from her teachers and Sunday school leaders.

Millie Kate Chapman Pre-K Kindergarten

Current School
Mustard Seed Preschool

She's starting school next year and we are looking for a classical Christian education and great community.

Millie is so beloved in our family. She is spunky and confident and gets along with everyone. She makes us all laugh with her silliness, and also has such sweet moments. When we've had younger kids or babies in our home through foster care, it is so sweet to see her loving them and trying to be helpful as one of the "big kids". She does gymnastics at LIS with her siblings, but other than that she just plays at home and with neighbor friends.

She's still so young but pretty much loves to do anything if it's with her siblings. She sits and listens during our group time or plays quietly in the room. She's been learning numbers and letters at her preschool but I haven't been doing any formal education at home with her just yet.

Sometimes Millie will push back on discipline and we have to work to be consistent with her. Her teachers all tell us she is wonderful in class and never has issues listening or obeying.
